The midway point between Key Largo and Key West, Marathon is the largest city in the Florida Keys. The Seven Mile Bridge, built on the foundation of Henry Flagler’s East Coast Railroad, begins here and joins the Middle Keys to the Lower Keys. Named for the lament of a railroad engineer when told to continue the line still farther, the city is the commercial and sport fishing center of the Middle Keys. Anglers will find copious amounts of billfish, dolphin, tarpon and tuna in the Gulf of Mexico or the Atlantic Ocean, while sailors, scuba divers and snorkelers won't be able to resist the vast expanses of clear blue water.

NATIONAL PARKBig Cypress National Preserve Two major highways, Alligator Alley (I-75) and Tamiami Trail (US 41), cross the preserve and make it accessible from both coasts. Big Cypress National Preserve is part of Big Cypress Swamp, which encompasses more than 2,400 square miles of south Florida. These areas are a major source of fresh water for the fragile Everglades and the southwestern part of the state. Big Cypress National Preserve protects this valuable resource and provides sanctuary for varied wildlife, including alligators, herons, egrets, woodpeckers, bald eagles, deer and the endangered Florida panther. Hunting and fishing are permitted under special regulations; licenses are required.
NATIONAL PARKBiscayne National Park Reached via Florida's Turnpike (exit 6, Speedway Boulevard) and south to S.W. 328th St. (North Canal Drive), Biscayne National Park encompasses a huge part of southeast Florida. Only 8,600 of its 173,000 acres are land; the rest are water, and there is as much to see below its surface as there is above it. The park offers a look at unspoiled Florida.
