History of Diving Museum

82990 Overseas Hwy, Islamorada, Florida

Although the History of Diving Museum only dates back to 2006, the original owners spent 40 years building the world’s largest collection of diving gear and memorabilia. It features 19 unique exhibit spaces dedicated to the evolution of diving, from early diving to atmospheric dive suits. The museum also has a 50-gallon aquarium with marine life native to the Florida Keys.

The History of Diving Museum is a great visit for those interested in diving and SCUBA history and for kids who enjoy aquarium visits. The museum also has an events calendar; some events are educational and free to attend, while others are more social and typically require a separate admission ticket. Special ticketing programs offer free admission if you qualify; call ahead to verify what promotions are available.

  • The parking lot has limited spaces available.

  • A scavenger hunt mobile game is available for kids to play as they tour the museum.

  • The museum has a gift shop but no eateries on-site.

The History of Diving Museum is located at 82990 Overseas Highway on the island of Islamorada in the Florida Keys. The Overseas Highway is the only direct route through the Florida Keys; driving a private car is the most common way to visit the museum. You can also take a Flixbus from Miami or a taxi cab or rideshare from another Florida Key.

The History of Diving Museum is open daily from 10am to 5pm, though it is closed on some holidays. All 19 exhibits can be viewed or skipped, so allow at least an hour for a quick visit. Remember that the heat peaks mid-afternoon, which means the museum may see heavier crowds as people seek out indoor shade. If visiting around noon, allow for an extra 30 minutes to compensate.

The San Pedro Underwater Archaeological Preserve State Park is located offshore, just a few miles south of the History of Diving Museum. The free state park has a submerged shipwreck beneath 18 feet (5.4 meters) of water. Just north of the History of Diving Museum, there are many dive shops, rental equipment, and tour agencies, some of which may help you dive into the state park to see the shipwreck.
