Valdosta's history is linked with transportation growth and a strategic location in the path of early westward expansion. Originally called Troupville, the settlement was designated a county seat in 1837. When it became evident that Troupville would not be on a proposed 1860 railroad route from Savannah to Mobile, Ala., the townsite was moved to take advantage of the potential prosperity.
