McPherson bears the name of Union Civil War general James Birdseye McPherson, who was killed in the Battle of Atlanta in 1864. Although Gen. McPherson never visited the Kansas city named after him, his bronze likeness has watched over the city from its perch in Memorial Park since 1917. At 100 N. Maple St. is the historically maintained 1893 McPherson County Courthouse and its 105-foot-high clock tower. The Richardsonian-Romanesque building was designed by John G. Haskell, a prominent architect at the time. The Santa Fe Trail, which crosses just south of McPherson, is a present-day reminder of the area's pioneer heritage. Learn More...
