What to Do in Fort Scott

Formed around a military outpost established in 1842 to keep peace along the American frontier, the town of Fort Scott survived after the fort itself was abandoned and sold in 1855. During this time, pro-slavery versus Free State conflicts were common, and Fort Scott’s location 6 miles from the Missouri border made it a frequent scene of violence during the turbulent period known as “Bleeding Kansas.”
