Named for the chief who helped settlers during the Black Hawk War, Decorah is on the banks of the Upper Iowa River. Attracted by the river's waterpower, Norwegian pioneers settled the region. Today, the surrounding limestone bluffs beckon campers, and the nearby streams lure canoeists and trout fishermen. (Canoe rentals are available.) The 11-mile paved, multi-use Trout Run Trail loops around Decorah, while a 200-foot waterfall marks Dunning's Spring Park as a scenic hiking or bicycling choice that's just out of downtown.

NATIONAL PARKEffigy Mounds National Monument Three miles north of Marquette on SR 76, Effigy Mounds National Monument extends 3 miles along the bluffs of the Mississippi River and covers 2,526 acres. The Yellow River divides the tract into two sections. The 206 mounds, some built in the shape of animals and birds, contain the remains of a Native American society that lived in this region between 1,000 and 2,500 years ago. NATIONAL PARKSleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore lies along 35 miles of the Lower Peninsula's northwestern shore and includes the Manitou Islands. The name is derived from an Ojibway Indian legend that tells of a bear and her two cubs forced to swim across Lake Michigan to escape a forest fire. The mother reached the shore safely and climbed to the top of a dune to await the cubs that lagged behind and never arrived.
