When you're in a great place like St. Petersburg and need to plan an itinerary, time feels especially valuable, especially if you have to take into consideration rain or summer heat. Luckily, there’s no reason a delay needs to infringe on your schedule. Whether you're hunkering down with the kids inside or searching for quality activities that don't require an umbrella, this article has you covered! Ranging from AAA GEM® attractions to indoor recreation and AAA Diamond restaurants, you'll find tips from AAA editors and inspectors as well as things to do indoors in St. Petersburg for all ages.

Though the Gulf beaches, The Dalí Museum and the Tampa Bay Rays’ home of Tropicana Field probably garner the most attention for bucket lists, be sure to visit the St. Pete Store and Visitor Center, 100 2nd. Ave., Suite 150, for on-site tips and tourism information.

So get comfortable and prepare to explore all that St. Pete has to offer — rain or shine! You’ll find there’s a wide breadth of experiences available. They include indoor recreational activities, shopping opportunities and exhibitions, as well as live performances and sporting events.

Experience a AAA GEM Museum®

AAA is your one-stop shop, especially when it comes to building your itinerary. AAA's GEMs — or Great Experience for Members® — are attractions designated as offering exceptional quality and value across various attraction categories, including arts and culture, children's activities, historic sites, outdoors and science, and more. Though the majority are located in Tampa — Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, Henry B. Plant Museum, The Florida Aquarium and ZooTampa at Lowry Park to name some — two are in St. Petersburg: The Dalí Museum and The Florida Holocaust Museum.

The Dalí Museum

This architecturally stunning museum hosts a large collection of work by the Spanish artist Salvador Dalí. Virtual museum offerings https://thedali.org/visit-virtually/, as well as educational programs and experiences for children and adults add to the fun. This summer, there is "Dalí Alive 360°," a multisensory exhibit influenced by artist's life and style. The immersive art experience unfolds in the newly created area called The Dalí Dome, which will provide light and sound from all directions. It's meant to further The Dalí's mission to portray Salvador Dalí's legacy in an interactive, approachable way.

The Florida Holocaust Museum

The museum tells the story of the Holocaust through a variety of displays, artifacts and interviews with survivors. One of the most important sights to see includes Boxcar No. 113 069-5, set on original tracks from Treblinka, an extermination camp near Warsaw, Poland; railroad boxcars such as the one on-site transported Jewish people and other prisoners to extermination camps like Treblinka. The museum also offers educational programming and changing exhibits, making it a poignant and thought-provoking place to visit at any time. Check out the museum's virtual exhibit if you're unable to visit in person: https://www.thefhm.org/exhibitions/virtual-exhibitions/.

Little ones will love Bella Brava Pizza Kitchen, My First Market, Fire Station 15, Bay News 9 on the Air, Pet Vet and Great Beginnings. Consider it the perfect opportunity for some educational and interactive fun.

The Morean Arts Center is another fun option in St. Petersburg, and the free contemporary gallery is one of Florida’s oldest. The center offers a variety of art classes for adults and children, as well as changing exhibits. Conveniently, it’s steps away from the Chihuly Collection.

Museum of Fine Arts

St. Petersburg Museum of History

A treasure trove of 32,000 artifacts and 8,000 digitized photographs illuminate the region's past at this history lover's paradise. Displays range from the area’s very first commercial airline flight in 1914 to St. Petersburg’s tourist industry. Notable exhibits include Schrader's Little Cooperstown, which showcases the importance of baseball to local culture. Also available are engaging rotating exhibits and archives for delving into research.

Live Music, Shows and Performances

St. Petersburg offers numerous live shows and performances year-round, giving enthusiasts plenty of opportunity to immerse themselves in all things entertainment. Sites range from iconic concert venue Jannus Live, which is standing room only, to theaters and event spaces such as Nova 535 and the historic Coliseum. The Floridian Social Club, once the beloved State Theatre, resumed its live entertainment; cover fees charged Thursday to Sunday.

American Stage Theatre

Founded in 1977, American Stage Theatre Company is the Tampa Bay Area's longest-running professional live theatre. Performances are steps away from a myriad waterfront dining options, world-class museums and other attractions at Raymond James Theater on the St. Petersburg College campus.

The Duke Energy Center for the Arts - Mahaffey Theater

Walkable from the Dalí, The Duke Energy Center for the Arts - Mahaffey Theater is a 2,031-seat performing arts center located in downtown St. Petersburg. The theater hosts a wide variety of events, including concerts, dance performances and theatrical productions.

freeFall Theatre

Shop in St. Petersburg

The rain can be a deterrent when shopping in St. Petersburg, but there are many reasons why it's worth braving the weather. The very museums and galleries you’ve planned to visit feature remarkable gift shops; think the Chihuly Collection Store. Farmers markets and pop-up markets provide locally sourced crafts and goods. Meanwhile, Tyrone Square Mall offers the typical mall experience just 4 miles from the beach. Whether you’re window-shopping or looking for unique pieces for a souvenir, there are shops galore in St. Petersburg, so keep an eye out for a few of this editor’s faves.

Artpool

The funky independent spot has everything you need to give your wardrobe and home a style upgrade. Whether you are looking for something special like a vinyl record or just a timeless piece to add to your wardrobe, this retailer is sure to have something both funky and satisfying.

Florida CraftArt

Open seven days a week, this gallery and arts nonprofit showcases Florida's top-tier artisans. Located in the architecturally significant Craftsman House Gallery, the site allows you to browse some of the most well-crafted pieces in the region while also supporting local makers.

Sundial St. Pete

Sundial St. Pete is an open-air shopping, dining, and entertainment complex located in the heart of downtown, so you might want to bring an umbrella or poncho if you’re planning any side trips. Once memorably known as BayWalk, the complex features dozens of shops, services and restaurants, as well as the AMC Sundial, a movie theater where you can bide your time and enjoy the latest movies.

Tombolo Books

There’s just something about browsing a bookstore, especially on a rainy day. This popular spot in the Grand Central District is a prime destination for readers in search of a little something extra on their literary journeys. As an indie bookstore, it has a wide selection of literature from creative minds nearby and around the world. There are book clubs, book signings with local authors and children’s storytime. With a comfortable atmosphere for browsing and reading recommendations from bookstore staff, visitors can easily find either the perfect rainy-day read or something to add to their to-be-read pile.

Take in a Game or Sporting Event in St. Pete

Indoor sporting events offer a great solution to cheer on the home team, while staying safe and dry at the same time. With enclosed facilities, athletes can compete against each other in scheduled bouts, notably basketball and volleyball, without the worry of getting washed out; check local listings or the nearest box office.

St. Petersburg Sports Teams

St. Petersburg is home to a number of professional sports teams, including the Tampa Bay Rays of Major League Baseball and the Tampa Bay Rowdies of the United Soccer League at St. Petersburg’s Al Lang Stadium. (That’s not to mention the nearby Tampa Bay Lightning or Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Tampa.) In addition to professional and minor league sports teams, St. Petersburg is also home to several college sports teams, including the University of South Florida Bulls and the Eckerd College Tritons. While not all of the above provide all-weather sporting events, check listings to ensure that local rain won't ruin a well-planned day out. Especially keep in mind matchups with the Rays, usually April through October, or Lightning (in nearby Tampa), October through April.

Tropicana Field

Tropicana Field is the home of the Tampa Bay Rays, and it's also the only venue with a fixed-roof, dome stadium in Major League Baseball (MLB). Opened in 1990, it’s a place that has welcomed fans to enjoy pre-game activities, delicious dining options and other fun things to do. Over the years, Tropicana Field has become an iconic part of the sports culture (and a conversation starter when it comes to the site’s possible redevelopment).

Various Indoor Things to Do in St. Petersburg

Don't forget about all the great indoor activities, ranging from hands-on art projects to relaxing recreation, even golf! Keeping everyone entertained and dry, Top Golf offers climate-controlled bays — intimate enough for couples but big enough for larger parties. If you need a good workout, many local yoga, pilates or exercise studios offer drop-in rates. For something a bit more creative, check out the Clay Center of St. Petersburg, Painting with a Twist or a glass art class. The Zen Art Glass Studio and the Morean Glass Studio & Hot Shop both offer classes as well as blowing demonstrations.

Let’s be honest: There are simply too many activities to name. So whether you choose to scale new heights at Vertical Ventures, bowl at Ten Pin Lanes or take a class (of any kind), check the preferred activities’ calendars and fees, and plan accordingly.

Wait Out the Rain in a Restaurant

Waiting out a rainstorm at a restaurant or brewery can be a great way to relax and pass the time. It's a refreshing change of pace from rushing around, allowing you to catch your breath and maybe even converse with locals about things to see. While St. Petersburg is known for trendy restaurants and craft beers from local breweries, reserve time for some AAA recommended spots. Notably, AAA Diamond restaurants are independently evaluated by an anonymous AAA Inspector to ensure they meet the highest standards. So why not indulge? There's nothing like enjoying a warm beverage and comfort food while watching the rainfall outside.

Frescos Waterfront Bistro

Diners can find freshly-caught seafood dishes as well as classic American fare at this dog-friendly restaurant that’s designated AAA Approved. Accommodating numerous preferences and needs — gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan — this bistro offers something to satisfy any craving. Whether it's an intimate lunch with a view of the St. Pete Marina or a sunset dinner, this establishment transforms into the ideal atmosphere for a romantic evening. If the weather is not too bad, order a beverage on the patio.

Maritana Grille (St. Pete Beach)

Located in The Don CeSar, https://www.aaa.com/tripcanvas/hotel/the-don-cesar-28046, the restaurant blends the timeless elegance of its surroundings with updated amenities. With stunning Gulf views, Maritana offers fantastic service and an extensive menu, which boasts sustainable and locally sourced seafood. Whether you’re booking an intimate occasion or simply ducking in to enjoy the ambience until the weather clears, this AAA Four Diamond restaurant is a premier dining destination. Note: No flip-flops, tank tops or athletic shorts are allowed.
