Recreational activities include cross-country skiing, hunting, hiking, horseback riding and camping. A 34-mile segment of the North Country National Scenic Trail, which begins in New York state and ends at Lake Sakakawea State Park, traverses the grassland. This 4,500-mile foot trail crosses seven northern states and is part of a trail system that includes the Appalachian and Pacific Crest trails. Depending on the season, hikers can observe flocks of geese, ducks and sandhill cranes.
