Hiawatha National Forest

The forest also manages Government Island, one of Les Cheneaux Islands, which offers an unspoiled environment for boating and other outdoor activities. Grand Island National Recreation Area near Munising is adjacent to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

Recreational opportunities in the forest include hunting for black bears, deer, grouse, turkeys and rabbits; fishing for bass, pike, trout and walleye; cross-country skiing and snowmobiling; camping; canoeing along canoe routes and boating on more than 400 lakes; and hiking or bicycling along miles of trails. Visitors may enjoy a drive along the Lake Superior shoreline on the Whitefish Bay Scenic Byway.

West of Munising near the town of Christmas is Bay Furnace Historic Site where the remains of an 1870s iron furnace can be seen. Forest daily 24 hours. Furnace daily dawn-dusk. Free. For further information contact the Forest Supervisor, 820 Rains Dr., Gladstone, MI 49837; phone (906) 428-5800.
