Valdosta's history is linked with transportation growth and a strategic location in the path of early westward expansion. Originally called Troupville, the settlement was designated a county seat in 1837. When it became evident that Troupville would not be on a proposed 1860 railroad route from Savannah to Mobile, Ala., the townsite was moved to take advantage of the potential prosperity. Troupville citizens renamed the town Valdosta for the governor's home Val de Aosta, or “Vale of Beauty.”

NATIONAL PARKCumberland Island National Seashore The largest and southernmost of Georgia's barrier islands, Cumberland Island parallels the Georgia coast just north of the Florida border. The relatively flat island, 17.5 miles long by 3 miles wide, is separated from the mainland by several miles of salt marsh, river and sound. On its eastern side white sand beaches rise to dunes that give way to a forest of magnolias, oaks, palmettos and pines. More than 300 species of birds have been sighted on the island.
