When the youthful Greek revolutionary general Demetrios Ypsilanti held the entire Turkish Army at bay and escaped without losing even one of his 300 soldiers, he had no idea that his bravery would cause a muddy but energetic village in the wilds of southeastern Michigan to become his namesake in 1832. This city on the Huron River is an industrial center and the home of 880-acre Eastern Michigan University. Ford Gallery , on campus at 114 Ford Hall, features works by students and faculty as well as artists of local interest. The gallery is usually open Monday through Saturday, but exhibits rotate regularly, so you should call ahead to make sure the facility is open before visiting; (734) 487-1268. Ypsilanti is also home to Riverside Park and the 1890s Water Tower.

NATIONAL PARKAllegheny National Forest Allegheny National Forest extends 40 miles south from the New York-Pennsylvania border through the counties of Warren, Forest, Elk and McKean. The only national forest in Pennsylvania, its approximately 517,000 acres include 500 miles of fishing streams, 272 miles of hiking and cross-country ski trails, 300 miles of snowmobile trails and 108 miles of trail-bike and ATV routes. Several scenic drives traverse the area; contact the forest for recommended routes.

NATIONAL PARKFort Necessity National Battlefield Eleven miles east of Uniontown on US 40, Fort Necessity National Battlefield surrounds a reconstruction of the fort built by George Washington in 1754. The Battle of Fort Necessity, in which Washington led the Colonial Virginia Regiment alongside the British regulars from South Carolina against a strong force of French and Native Americans, occurred at the site on July 3, 1754. This was Washington's first major event in his military career and it marked the beginning of the French and Indian War.
NATIONAL PARKGeorgian Bay Islands National Park is the park's largest island. Trails traverse the island, emerging from park campgrounds, picnic and docking areas. From the walking trails visitors can see various rare species of wildlife, a variety of birds, spectacular landscapes, precious habitats and evidence of the historical past. Summer recreational activities include fishing, hiking, swimming, bicycling, boating, kayaking and canoeing.
