The cemetery was established in 1944 by the 609th Quartermaster Company of the U.S. 3rd Army. The city of Luxembourg served once as headquarters for General George S. Patton’s U.S. Third Army, and the Luxembourg American Cemetery is now the final resting place of General Patton.
