NATIONAL PARKCape Breton Highlands National Park Cape Breton Highlands National Park has entrances on the Cabot Trail 5 kilometres (3 mi.) northeast of Chéticamp on the west side of the island and at Ingonish Beach on the east. The park is in the northern part of Cape Breton Island. Bounded on the west by the Gulf of St. Lawrence and on the east by the Atlantic Ocean, the park protects 950 square kilometres (366 sq. mi.) of highlands and coastal wilderness. The first national park in the Atlantic provinces, it bears a striking resemblance to coastal regions of Scotland.
NATIONAL PARKForillon National Park Forillon National Park (Parc national Forillon) encompasses 244 square kilometres (95 sq. mi.) on the northeast tip of the Gaspé Peninsula and is accessible from Gaspé via Hwy. 132 E. Jagged seaside cliffs, capes, pebbled beach coves, fir covered highlands and ocean terraced lowlands typify park scenery. Of sedimentary origin, geologic formations contain rocks ranging in age from the Ordovician to the Devonian periods.
NATIONAL PARKFort Beausejour Fort Cumberland National Historic Site Fort Beauséjour—Fort Cumberland National Historic Site is at 111 Fort Beauséjour Rd. in the village of Aulac, 8 kilometres (5 mi.) east of Sackville via Hwy. 2 (exit 513A) and 1.5 kilometres (.9 mi.) west of the Nova Scotia border. Built in 1751 in response to the construction of an English fort at Beaubassin a year earlier, Fort Beauséjour defended French interests along the Isthmus of Chignecto.
NATIONAL PARKFortress Of Louisbourg National Historic Site On Cape Breton Island, 35 kilometres (22 mi.) south of Sydney on Hwy. 22 beyond the modern town of Louisbourg, the 6,000-hectare (14,826-acre) Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site includes a reconstruction of the massive fortress erected by the French 1720-45 to defend their colonies.
