Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge Scenic Drive

30.1 miles: 0 hours, 49 minutes

Oklahoma's SR 49 takes you through the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge, which protects more than 59,000 acres of mixed grass prairie habitat. Bison, elk and white-tailed deer roam freely here, along with Texas longhorn cattle, which have been preserved for historical importance.

Beginning at Medicine Park, this two-lane highway (SR 49) takes you between Elmer Thomas Lake and Lake Lawtonka, winding through scrubby oaks and across vast prairie toward the Wichita Mountains. Watch out for free-roaming bison, elk and longhorn cattle on the open range. Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge is also home to prairie dogs, armadillos and many species of birds.
