SCENIC BYWAY

Top of the Rockies Scenic Route 91

22.1 miles: 0 hours, 23 minutes

Starting near the Copper Mountain ski resort in central Colorado, Top of the Rockies Scenic Route 91 takes the high road—quite literally—climbing up to 11,318-foot Fremont Pass. The byway descends a bit to the historic mining town of Leadville, which claims to be the highest incorporated city in America.

Clean, brisk mountain air; broad alpine valleys; and stark, snow-capped peaks soaring up to 14,000 feet set Top of the Rockies Scenic Route 91 apart from other byways with beautiful views. Watch for marmots, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, deer and elk as you drive this two-lane route past reservoirs reflecting blue sky and jagged ridges.
