Smith River Scenic Byway Road Trip

36.0 miles: 0 hours, 45 minutes

California's northwestern corner is wilderness at its most magnificent, thanks to the protected areas within Redwood National and State Parks. Put the Smith River Scenic Byway (US 199) at the top of your bucket list; seeing towering stands of ancient coast redwoods up close is an awe-inspiring experience. You'll definitely want to do some hiking, too.

US 199 branches off US 101 several miles north of Crescent City and immediately enters Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park. Following the Middle Fork of the Smith River, the byway traverses a spectacularly primeval setting: white-water rapids, riotous growths of ferns flourishing in the mild, damp climate, and old-growth redwoods as tall as a 35-story skyscraper.
