Red Rock Scenic Byway Road Trip

7.0 miles: 0 hours, 11 minutes

The Red Rock Scenic Byway is a short drive, but it is long on breathtaking panoramas. Scenic overlooks provide ample photo ops along SR 179. The semi-arid topography is the base for giant striped monoliths that seem to change color with each passing cloud or ray of sunshine. From bright red to pale sand, most of the rock is sedimentary and constantly eroding and changing shape.

TRIP STOPS

With its rolling green landscape, and iron-infused red rocks and canyons speckled with green pines and bushes, the Red Rock Scenic Byway (SR 179) is a destination unto itself. Get your camera ready to capture the magnificence of nature everywhere you look. It is easy to see why this area was a favorite spot for filming Westerns in the 1940s and '50s. Be on the lookout for such wildlife as deer, eagles, elk and hawks.
