Generals Scenic Highway Road Trip

0.0 miles: 0 hours, 0 minutes

Seasonal route: The road is subject to closure in winter. Named for two of the state's most famous giant sequoia trees - the General Sherman and the General Grant - Generals Highway (SR 198) is a magnificently scenic excursion along Sequoia National Park's eastern edge. Winding through a forest of giants, with sudden views of isolated mountains around every turn, makes this notoriously steep, narrow and winding drive worth it.

Generals Highway (SR 198) accesses Sequoia National Park and Giant Sequoia National Monument. At the midpoint is Giant Forest Sequoia Grove. A half-mile hiking trail leads down to the massive, 275-foot-tall General Sherman Tree. On the way to the river meadows around Three Rivers, the route switchbacks frequently. Winter snowstorms may temporarily close the road.
