SCENIC BYWAY

Flint Hills National Scenic Byway

The Flint Hills, so named for their bands of limestone and flint, are the largest remnants of tallgrass prairie on the continent. Along SR 177, see uncut native bluestem grasses that can grow 8 feet high. A lot of the land along the Flint Hills National Scenic Byway looks as it did when the Kaw, Osage, Pawnee and Wichita tribes were here.

Along the Flint Hills National Scenic Byway, in east central Kansas, enjoy panoramic views of the native grasses and wildflowers of the tallgrass prairie. The two-lane road passes through small towns and across the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, a 10,894-acre site that protects a remnant of the continent’s once vast tallgrass prairie.
