SCENIC BYWAY

Flaming Gorge-Uintas Scenic Byway

62.7 miles: 1 hours, 16 minutes

Known as the "drive through the ages," the Flaming Gorge-Uintas Scenic Byway is a prehistoric time machine. The drive from south to north starts with rocky terrain on US 191 and transitions to cool blue waters of Steinaker Reservoir. Soon, Aspen and lodgepole pines rise from the Ashley National Forest. The finale? Towering Aztec sandstone formations plunge into fiery red canyons along SR 44. At nearly every turn-out, there’s a new view.

U.S. Department of Agriculture/Louis Haynes

From water vistas of the Steinaker Reservoir in the south to the vibrant presence of the red rock canyon near the northern terminus, nature loads this byway with scenic geological history. There’s 1-billion-year-old (yes, with a “B”) exposed rock of Uintas, desert, wildlife and even habitats once used by dinosaurs. Explore more at the Red Canyon Overlook and Visitor Center or the Flaming Gorge Dam; both are slightly off of US 191/SR 44.
