The town was established shortly after 1811 when Abraham and Ann Pickering built a home and trading post. In 1815 it was finally given a name, Jacksonville, commemorating Andrew Jackson's defeat of British forces in the battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812; citizens changed the name to Pickerington in 1827. The 1,608 acres of Pickerington Ponds Wetlands Wildlife Refuge feature observation areas with waterfowl, shorebirds and raptors.

NATIONAL PARKAbraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park Three miles south of Hodgenville on US 31E and SR 61, Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park preserves the birthplace of the 16th U.S. president. Lincoln was born on Feb. 12, 1809, in a one-room log cabin at Sinking Spring Farm, where he lived for the first 2.5 years of his life.
NATIONAL PARKAllegheny National Forest Allegheny National Forest extends 40 miles south from the New York-Pennsylvania border through the counties of Warren, Forest, Elk and McKean. The only national forest in Pennsylvania, its approximately 517,000 acres include 500 miles of fishing streams, 272 miles of hiking and cross-country ski trails, 300 miles of snowmobile trails and 108 miles of trail-bike and ATV routes. Several scenic drives traverse the area; contact the forest for recommended routes.

NATIONAL PARKAppomattox Court House National Historical Park Three miles northeast of Appomattox on SR 24, Appomattox Court House National Historical Park is a 1,744-acre site. On April 9, 1865, Gen. Robert E. Lee's weakened and outnumbered Confederate Army of Northern Virginia was cut off at Appomattox Court House by Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. The two commanders met in the parlor of a house owned by Wilmer McLean—and the Army of Northern Virginia was surrendered to Grant.
NATIONAL PARKBig South Fork National River And Recreation Area Approached by SR 297, US 27, US 127 and SR 52, Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area encompasses 125,000 acres on the Cumberland Plateau in northeastern Tennessee and southeastern Kentucky. Ninety miles of the Big South Fork River and its tributaries tumble through gorges carved over millions of years in the sandstone of the Cumberland Plateau. The area's eroded landscape—which contains scenic features such as natural arches, pinnacles, spires, sheer bluffs and huge sandstone overhangs—is said to have the most sandstone arches in the eastern United States.

The 239-acre site commemorates Booker T. Washington's first 9 years in slavery by re-creating the environment of his childhood at Burroughs Plantation.

Natural stone arches, waterfalls and caves are among the forest's exceptional geological features.
