NATIONAL PARKAgate Fossil Beds National Monument Agate Fossil Beds National Monument is on SR 29, 22 miles south of Harrison or 34 miles north of Mitchell in the Niobrara River Valley. Imbedded in the sedimentary rock are fossils formed some 20 million years ago. Named for James Cook's Agate Springs Ranch, this 3,000-acre site also features Cook's collection of 19th- and 20th-century American Indian artifacts.

NATIONAL PARKFlorissant Fossil Beds National Monument Two miles south of Florissant on Teller CR 1, Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument protects an area once covered by a prehistoric lake. As layer after layer of volcanic ash accumulated some 34 to 35 million years ago, the lake vanished, but its plant and animal life were preserved almost intact in paper-thin layers of shale. It is these fossils, dating from the Eocene period and including standing petrified sequoia stumps, that the 6,000-acre monument protects.
NATIONAL PARKFort Laramie National Historic Site Fort Laramie National Historic Site is off US 26, 3 miles southwest of the town of Fort Laramie. Near the confluence of the Laramie and North Platte rivers, the site covers 832 acres. From its founding as Fort William in 1834 and until 1849, the fort was an important fur-trading post. Purchased by the U.S. government in 1849 and renamed Fort Laramie, the fort served to aid in the migrations to Oregon and California. By 1890 the fort had outlived its usefulness and was abandoned, its land and buildings sold at public auction.
