Originally settled by the Huron people in the 14th century, the region became heavily populated by the early 1600s. French fur traders and Jesuit missionaries and their Huron converts were attracted to the growing area and became immortalized in the Jesuit Relations and Allied Documents written in the 17th century. A depiction of a Jesuit mission is among the more than 33 hand-painted murals with historic themes adorning exterior walls of downtown buildings, creating the effect of an outdoor art gallery.

NATIONAL PARKAllegheny National Forest Allegheny National Forest extends 40 miles south from the New York-Pennsylvania border through the counties of Warren, Forest, Elk and McKean. The only national forest in Pennsylvania, its approximately 517,000 acres include 500 miles of fishing streams, 272 miles of hiking and cross-country ski trails, 300 miles of snowmobile trails and 108 miles of trail-bike and ATV routes. NATIONAL PARKFort Stanwix National Monument Off SR 26 at 100 N. James St. in Rome, Fort Stanwix was built during the French and Indian War. In 1776, at the outbreak of the Revolution, the fort was repaired and restored by American rebels. Attacked by a force of British, Tories and Native Americans in 1777, it withstood a 3-week siege. The fort contains exhibits. Costumed interpreters re-enact 18th-century life in a military outpost. Museum open daily 9-5, Apr.-Dec.; Wed.-Sun. 9-5, rest of year. Fortress open daily 9:15-4:45.
