A log cabin, the first structure on the site of Laconia, was probably erected in 1766. Before then the presence of Sachem Indians had prevented settlement, although the area had been granted as early as 1727. Growth was slow until the railroad reached the community—then called Meredith Bridge—in 1848. Thereafter mills and factories proliferated, and Laconia became a trading and manufacturing center.

NATIONAL PARKFort Stanwix National Monument Off SR 26 at 100 N. James St. in Rome, Fort Stanwix was built during the French and Indian War. In 1776, at the outbreak of the Revolution, the fort was repaired and restored by American rebels. Attacked by a force of British, Tories and Native Americans in 1777, it withstood a 3-week siege.
