The first permanent settler came to this area in 1811, and the township was formed in 1822. In 1831 the settlement expanded when Mormon leader Joseph Smith and many of his followers arrived; Smith wrote much of the doctrine of the Church of Latter Day Saints while he lived here. Nearly 3,000 people lived in Kirtland by the time the Mormons moved westward in 1838.

NATIONAL PARKAllegheny National Forest Allegheny National Forest extends 40 miles south from the New York-Pennsylvania border through the counties of Warren, Forest, Elk and McKean. The only national forest in Pennsylvania, its approximately 517,000 acres include 500 miles of fishing streams, 272 miles of hiking and cross-country ski trails, 300 miles of snowmobile trails and 108 miles of trail-bike and ATV routes.
