One notable day in 1867 the wares offered by a Cheyenne war party included some newly acquired scalps.
NATIONAL PARKBuffalo National River Reached via US 65 or SRs 7, 14 or 21 in northwestern Arkansas, Buffalo National River stretches through the rugged Ozark Mountains. While the Buffalo River courses 150 miles through the Ozarks, only its lower 135 miles and adjacent land are designated a national river. To protect the natural beauty of this area, Congress declared it a national river in 1972, thereby preserving it from development and population encroachment.

NATIONAL PARKHomestead National Monument Of America Four miles northwest of Beatrice on SR 4 following signs, Homestead National Monument of America was one of the first quarter sections of land to be claimed under the Homestead Act of 1862. The act provided a process by which citizens (or intended citizens) could acquire their own homestead. After filing an application, prospective landowners could claim 160 acres (a quarter of a square mile) of surveyed federal land. If the homesteader lived on the land for the next 5 years, built a dwelling and cultivated crops, he could file the necessary paperwork and be granted ownership of the land.
NATIONAL PARKOzark National Forest In the Ozark Highlands and Boston Mountains of northwestern Arkansas, the four principal divisions of the Ozark National Forest total more than a million acres. Recreational activities such as hiking, camping, canoeing, horseback riding, hunting, fishing, mountain bicycle riding, swimming and picnicking can be enjoyed in the rugged beauty of the forest.
NATIONAL PARKPea Ridge National Military Park On US 62 about 9 mi. n.e. of Rogers, in northwest Arkansas, the 4,300-acre park was the site of the Battle of Pea Ridge, also known to the Confederacy as the Battle of Elkhorn Tavern. A reconstruction of the tavern is on the original site. Largely as a result of this battle, fought March 7-8, 1862, Union forces succeeded in securing the state of Missouri. A 7-mile self-guiding driving tour through the park provides insight into the battle. A small portion of the “Trail of Tears” also is within the park.
NATIONAL PARKWilsons Creek National Battlefield The battle of Wilson's Creek took place Aug. 10, 1861. Brig. Gen. Nathaniel Lyon was the first Union general to die in battle during the Civil War. A 5-mile, self-guiding driving tour passes eight wayside exhibits and 12 displays. A .6-mile hiking trail leads to Bloody Hill, the major battle site. The Ray House and Ray Springhouse have been restored to their 1861 appearance. Living-history programs are presented regularly on weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
