Hopewell is an outgrowth of old City Point, which was founded in 1613 by Sir Thomas Dale. In 1622 the town was wiped out by a Native American attack, and not until the Civil War did the community revive. Its strategic location on the bluffs overlooking the confluence of the James and Appomattox rivers and its deep-water access made City Point an ideal setting for a large Union supply base, which Gen. Ulysses S. Grant transformed into a vast base of operations for his siege of Petersburg.
