Honesdale, Pennsylvania
Established in 1828 as a terminal for canal barges carrying coal to New York markets, Honesdale was the site of the first use of a commercial steam locomotive in the United States. Imported from England, the locomotive Stourbridge Lion made its trial run on Aug. 8, 1829. Too heavy for the rails, it was withdrawn from service.
