A boulder, life-size statue and interpretive signage in a parklike setting in Freeport mark the site of the second Lincoln-Douglas debate of 1858. According to historians Stephen A. Douglas' renowned “Freeport Doctrine” speech helped to make Abraham Lincoln president and hastened the outbreak of the Civil War. Krape Park, about 100 acres on S. Park Boulevard and Empire Street, contains a creek, waterfall, hiking trails, a carousel, playground and picnic facilities. Canoe rentals also are available.
