Falmouth was one of 14 townships created by Gov. Charles Lawrence in 1759. The land left vacant after the Acadian expulsion was offered free to any New Englander who would relocate to Nova Scotia. Thousands of farmers from Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts accepted the offer; they became known in Canada as the New England Planters.

NATIONAL PARKCape Breton Highlands National Park Cape Breton Highlands National Park has entrances on the Cabot Trail 5 kilometres (3 mi.) northeast of Chéticamp on the west side of the island and at Ingonish Beach on the east. The park is in the northern part of Cape Breton Island. Bounded on the west by the Gulf of St. Lawrence and on the east by the Atlantic Ocean, the park protects 950 square kilometres (366 sq. mi.) of highlands and coastal wilderness. NATIONAL PARKForillon National Park Forillon National Park (Parc national Forillon) encompasses 244 square kilometres (95 sq. mi.) on the northeast tip of the Gaspé Peninsula and is accessible from Gaspé via Hwy. 132 E. Jagged seaside cliffs, capes, pebbled beach coves, fir covered highlands and ocean terraced lowlands typify park scenery.
