Founded in 1889, Eatonville was named for pioneer settler Thomas C. Van Eaton. Large-scale milling began after the railroad arrived in 1904, and the town became an important lumbering center. Pack Forest, 3 miles southwest of town on SR 7, is a 4,300-acre tract used by the University of Washington's College of Forest Resources to discover, teach and demonstrate concepts of sustainable forestry.
