Dixon was established in 1830 at the Rock River crossing on the Peoria-Galena Trail. Two years later, during the Black Hawk War, Capt. Abraham Lincoln of the Sangamon County Volunteers served here with two individuals who would later factor into the nation’s history: Zachary Taylor, then leader of the 1st Infantry Regiment and later the nation’s 12th president; and Jefferson Davis, who served in the regiment and later became the president of the Confederate States of America. Lincoln's election as captain of his fellow volunteers was his first elective office.

NATIONAL PARKChequamegon Nicolet National Forest In north-central and northeastern Wisconsin, the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest comprises 1.5 million acres in four separate regions. The Chequamegon (she-Wa-ma-gon) area covers 856,938 acres east, south and northwest of Park Falls on SRs 182 and 13; the Nicolet (nik-oh-LAY) area totals 661,200 acres east of Rhinelander and is accessible via several major highways.
NATIONAL PARKEffigy Mounds National Monument Three miles north of Marquette on SR 76, Effigy Mounds National Monument extends 3 miles along the bluffs of the Mississippi River and covers 2,526 acres. The Yellow River divides the tract into two sections. The 206 mounds, some built in the shape of animals and birds, contain the remains of a Native American society that lived in this region between 1,000 and 2,500 years ago. At the visitor center a video and museum explain the history of the mounds.

NATIONAL PARKShawnee National Forest In the Shawnee Hills of southern Illinois, 280,000-acre Shawnee National Forest extends from the Mississippi River eastward to the Ohio. In sharp contrast to the level croplands of central Illinois, this region is characterized by hills and valleys, timber-producing land, scenic vistas and such wildlife as deer, foxes, waterfowl, turkeys and quails. A network of public roads and trails interlaces the forest, providing access to campgrounds, wildlife areas and unusual rock formations.
NATIONAL PARKSleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore lies along 35 miles of the Lower Peninsula's northwestern shore and includes the Manitou Islands. The name is derived from an Ojibway Indian legend that tells of a bear and her two cubs forced to swim across Lake Michigan to escape a forest fire. The mother reached the shore safely and climbed to the top of a dune to await the cubs that lagged behind and never arrived. She still maintains her vigil in the form of a dark hill of sand atop a plateau, while the errant cubs have become the North and South Manitou islands.
NATIONAL PARKSt. Croix National Scenic Riverway Flowing from the highlands of northern Wisconsin and central Minnesota to the St. Croix's juncture with the Mississippi River just s.e. of Minneapolis-St. Paul, the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway is a 255-mile river reserve. The Upper St. Croix River and its tributary, the Namekagon River, were among the original eight rivers designated as National Wild and Scenic Rivers in 1968. Four years later the Lower St. Croix River from St. Croix Falls to Prescott was added to the system by Congress.
