Settled in 1834, Crown Point has preserved many of its historic buildings on the town square. The 1878 Lake County Courthouse is a grand combination of Romanesque and Georgian architectural styles. Because local law allowed couples to marry without a waiting period, thousands came here to be wed between 1915 and 1940, including such celebrities as Ronald Reagan and Rudolph Valentino. John Dillinger made his famous escape from the county jail in 1934 while awaiting murder charges; tours of the “escape-proof” Sheriff's House are available Thursdays and Saturdays, late April through September. NATIONAL PARKEffigy Mounds National Monument Three miles north of Marquette on SR 76, Effigy Mounds National Monument extends 3 miles along the bluffs of the Mississippi River and covers 2,526 acres. The Yellow River divides the tract into two sections. The 206 mounds, some built in the shape of animals and birds, contain the remains of a Native American society that lived in this region between 1,000 and 2,500 years ago.
