What to Do in Cheney

Rolling grasslands dotted with lakes and pine woods surround (CHEE-nee), which sprang up with the arrival of the railroad from Spokane in 1881. First called Willow Springs, then Depot Springs, the town's present name honors the director of the Northern Pacific Railroad. Impressed by this, Benjamin P. Cheney donated $10,000 toward the founding of an academy in 1882; this school became the nucleus of Eastern Washington University.
