Zermatt-Matterhorn Ski Paradise

At an altitude of almost 13,000 feet (4,000 meters), the Zermatt-Matterhorn Ski Paradise ski slopes are among the highest in Europe. Unlike many ski resorts in the Alps, this one is accessible year-round. In the warmer months, skiers head high up to Theodul Glacier to enjoy miles of ski runs with spectacular mountain backdrops.
The ski slopes at Zermatt-Matterhorn Ski Paradise are suitable for a range of experience levels. In the winter, 124 miles (200 kilometers) of slopes are available, whereas in the summer, there are still 13 miles (21 kilometers). This makes it a popular spot for summertime athletic training, although recreational travelers are welcome.
The Zermatt-Matterhorn area is a popular destination for both independent and guided travel in Switzerland. Travelers who want to ski tend to visit independently, so they can spend as much (or as little) time on the slopes as they like.
If you want to go skiing in the summer, be aware of the effects of altitude. Take it easy until you’ve acclimatized, drink plenty of water, and be prepared to go to a lower altitude if you have headaches or nausea.
The longest ski slope is an impressive 15 miles (25 kilometers) long.
Beginners and travelers with kids should head to Wolli Park, which is sheltered from the wind and has easy slopes, as well as play equipment.
The town of Zermatt—the entry point for Zermatt-Matterhorn Ski Paradise—is car-free. Travelers with private vehicles must park at the nearby village of Täsch and take the train the rest of the way (a journey of about 10 minutes). By train, Zermatt is about 3.5 hours from Zurich and 4 hours from Geneva. To reach the ski resort from Zermatt, take the gondola—the starting point is about a 20-minute walk from Zermatt’s railway station.
While most travelers visit Switzerland for skiing in the winter, Zermatt-Matterhorn Ski Paradise is a year-round destination. May is a particularly good time to visit: The annual, month-long Spring Sesh festival offers special events, challenges, and concerts, as well as ski-pass discounts.
If visiting Zermatt in the summer, outdoor lovers shouldn’t miss the 2-hour Matterhorn Glacier Trail hike. The views of the iconic Matterhorn are impressive, and sign boards along the way give information on the landscape, flora, and fauna. Get a trail map from the tourism office.
