Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA)

It's easy to spend a whole day at Zeitz MOCAA, exploring the extensive permanent collection rotating temporary exhibits, and creative techniques used to incorporate the historic silos into museum displays. Visiting on a hop-on hop-off bus tour or purchasing skip-the-line tickets allows you to move past the often long lines at the museum entrance and get straight to the acclaimed artwork within.

Admission to the museum is included in the Cape Town City Pass, alongside attractions such as the Table Mountain cable car, Castle of Good Hope, and Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens.

Once the tallest building in Africa, the towering grain silos can be seen from throughout the surrounding area, making the museum easy to find if you’re exploring the V&A Waterfront on foot. You can also take public transportation to the museum (get off at the Waterfront Silo bus stop) or visit on a hop-on hop-off bus tour.

The museum is open daily, with extended evening hours on the first Friday of each month. The museum offers discounts on certain days including free entry from 10am to 6pm on Heritage Day (September 24) and periodic museum nights, which provide free entry from 5pm to 10pm for the first 2,000 guests and half-priced admission thereafter. Citizens of Africa get in free from 10am to 1pm on Wednesdays.

The pairing of the contemporary art museum with the abandoned grain silos was born out of a desire to preserve and make use of the historic silos and a parallel vision to create a grand African art museum in Cape Town. The silos prime location, innovation of architects, and funding from the visionary businessman Jochen Zeitz came together make the museum what it is today.
