POINT OF INTEREST

Yangmingshan National Park

CHN

Located on the northern edge of Taiwan, just a quick trip from Taipei, Yangmingshan National Park offers a dose of nature for city-dwellers and those touring the bustling capital. Visit Yangmingshan to hike through its volcanic scenery and rolling hills, soak in its hot springs, and, in the spring, see the cherry blossoms in bloom.

Home to the largest dormant volcano group on mainland Taiwan, Yangmingshan National Park features clear evidence of its thermal activity, from fumaroles (steaming hot springs) to the verdant heights of Qixing Mountain. Located across 4,377 square miles (11,338 square kilometers), the park’s diverse landscape also includes blossoms, grasslands, and a wealth of wildlife.

Numerous day-trip itineraries from Taipei feature excursions to Yangmingshan National Park, and often highlight park attractions like Yangmingshan’s Flower Clock—a large floral display that consists of a working clock. Private tours offer an even more personalized and flexible way to explore the park.

  • Yangmingshan National Park attracts hikers and outdoor enthusiasts with many hiking and biking trails.

  • The Headquarters Visitor Center is open daily, except for the last Monday of the month.

  • For an accessible introduction to hiking in the park, begin at the popular Qingtiangang Grassland Trails.

  • Former President Chiang Kai-shek once resided in the area, and a statue commemorates his time there.

  • Several hotels are located in the park, if you wish to plan a multi-day stay.

Yangmingshan National Park is served by several bus lines from Taipei, including the R5, S15, and 230; it’s also just a half-hour trip by car. Alternatively, look for a guided tour that includes round-trip transportation for a stress-free way to visit the park.

Yangmingshan National Park is a popular green retreat all throughout the year, though it is generally less crowded (and offers more comfortable temperatures) in the winter months. Weekends are the busiest times to visit; explore during the week to bypass the crowds.

One highlight in Yangmingshan National Park is the Grass Mountain Chateau. Built in the Japanese style in the 1920s, and the former residence of President Chiang Kai-shek, the historic landmark is a popular tourist destination today.
