Xinghai Square is one of Dalian’s top attractions, and one of China’s largest public squares. It’s a massive area with gardens, walking paths, a fountain show, amusement park, and restaurants—plus it’s right on the water, so you have some great views of Xinghai Bridge, especially at night, and you can rent boats there, too.
You can visit Xinghai Square on your own, but it can be more fun to join a tour, either a group or private one. This way your guide can tell you more about the area than you would learn on your own, and will most likely take you to other places in and around Dalian, like Binhai Road. Stroll around the park or the seafront, and if you have kids in tow, take them for some amusement park rides; afterwards, you can head to the beach for a picnic.
The square makes a great stop if you’re on a port visit.
Make sure to bring sun protection, because there isn’t a lot of shade.
Wear comfortable shoes for walking, since the park is huge.
It’s easy to reach Xinghai Square, by taking either the public bus or Subway Line 1; hop off at Xinghai Square Station, and you’re right there. You can also grab a taxi—just make sure to bring a hotel card with you so you can get back okay. Or, book a group or private tour that includes transportation, which takes the hassle out of organizing it.
The park is open all day throughout the year, but keep in mind that Dalian is cold in the winter, so the summer, spring, and fall are the best times to go. Every night there’s a fountain and light show, so check with your local guide to see exactly what time, and be sure to go and watch.
Since it’s right on the water, you find plenty of seafood on Dalian’s menus, which shouldn’t be missed. Dine with a group of friends so you can order a bunch of dishes to share. Make sure to try sea urchin dumplings and sea snails sautéed with cabbage and chili, and leave room for pickled cabbage, pork rib, and oyster stew.
