Whaling Museum

13 Broad St., Nantucket, MA

Long before Nantucket became a summer resort hot spot, the island was a vibrant whaling community. Learn about 400 years of whaling history at the Whaling Museum, home to nine galleries and more than a thousand whaling-related works of art and artifacts. End your visit with a stop on the rooftop deck for views of Nantucket Harbor.

A stop at the Whaling Museum is an ideal way to cap off a Nantucket tour by land or sea. Marvel at a 46-foot (14-meter) sperm whale skeleton, a huge Fresnel lens, a scrimshaw collection, and a replica 19th-century candle factory while learning about the important role whaling played in the island's history and economy. The museum offers daily themed programs and spotlight tours, the Discovery Center kids’ play area, and a bird’s-eye view of Nantucket Harbor from Tucker’s Roofwalk.

  • The museum has in-depth historic exhibitions plus kid-friendly play areas, so it's ideal for all ages.

  • Plan to spend 1–2 hours covering the museum on your own or with the free audio guide available on the Nantucket Historical Association website.

  • The museum has a gift shop, restrooms, and children’s play area.

  • All the exhibition halls and gift shop are accessible to wheelchairs and strollers.

The Whaling Museum is in the Nantucket Downtown Historic District, a short walk or bike ride from the ferry port and other Nantucket Historical Association sights. You can also take the NRTA Wave Bus to the Broad Street stop directly in front of the Whaling Museum.

The museum has a busy calendar of events, including themed lectures and programs related to the island’s history and whaling culture. Check the Nantucket Historical Association website for an updated program. The museum is open daily from May to October and closed on Sundays the rest of the year.

The Nantucket Historical Association manages a number of fascinating historic sights in the Nantucket Downtown Historic District. In addition to the Whaling Museum, visit the 19th-century Hadwen House to see how a wealthy whaling merchant lived and the Friends Meeting House, where island Quakers worshiped in the 18th century. Other historic gems include the restored Fire Hose Cart House, the Old Jail, and the Old Mill.
