POINT OF INTEREST

West Side Market

1979 W 25th St., Cleveland, Ohio

Cleveland’s oldest public market, the West Side Market, houses about 70 vendors selling meats, seafood, fruits, veggies, baked goods, flowers, ready-to-eat foods, spices, and nuts. Get a taste of local specialties brought to the city by immigrants, such as bratwurst and pierogies. Stuffed with history, the market offers visitors a look at the city’s past in a truly digestible way.

More than a century old, this European-style market looks like it did when it catered to the city’s immigrant community in the early days. Since its size and offerings can be overwhelming, consider booking a guided market tour to sample products—from beef jerky to falafel to the city’s beloved pierogies—as you learn about the market's history and architecture.

The historic Ohio City neighborhood, where the market is located, offers plenty of dining and drinking options, especially craft breweries. You’ll find Market Garden, Nano Brew Cleveland, and Great Lakes Brewing Company within a few blocks.

  • All vendors are located on the ground level, making the market wheelchair accessible. Wheelchairs are not available to rent or borrow.

  • The market’s 137-foot-tall (42-meter) clock tower serves as a beacon for Cleveland residents.

  • The market is a good place to visit in Cleveland’s cold winter months.

  • There is a second-floor observation walkway where you can sit and eat.

The West Side Market is located in Cleveland’s Ohio City neighborhood and is easily accessible by public transit. The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) operates rail, bus, and trolley lines throughout the city, with several bus stops found near the market and the West 25th Street/Ohio City subway station across the street. Taxis and rideshare services are readily available.

The market is open year-round on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from early morning to late afternoon, Saturdays from early morning to late afternoon, and Sundays from mid-morning to mid-afternoon. It’s closed on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Overall, spring (April and May) and fall (September and October) seasons are considered the best times to visit Cleveland. You’ll avoid the cold temperatures of winter and the heat and humidity of summer.

The trendy neighborhood where the West Side Market is located is home to high-end cocktail bars, beer gardens, vegan bistros, and farm-to-table restaurants, making it a hot spot for foodies. You’ll also find some of the city’s best street art and murals here and galleries like the Transformer Station, which has exhibitions from emerging local artists.
