Wave Rock

Wave Rock is characterized by vertical stripes of red, yellow, and gray, formed by water erosion over the rock face. Interpretive signs along the path to the base of the rock offer historical context. Other things to do in the area include bird-watching and visiting a wildlife park, Aboriginal rock art, pioneer museum, miniature soldier museum, and an antique lace collection.

Traveling to Wave Rock from Perth makes for a long day trip, so many prefer to book a tour and not worry about driving. Organized day trips typically include stops at additional Western Australia attractions such as Mundaring Weir, the historic town of York, sites with Aboriginal history or significance, and other rock formations such as Mulka's Cave, the Humps, or Hippo’s Yawn.

Wave Rock is 210 miles (340 kilometers) east of Perth—about a 4-hour drive. Head out of the city on State Route 40, or take Highway 94 to the Great Southern Highway if you wish to pass through the town of York. Alternatively, take a guided tour with included transportation.

Visiting in summer (December to February) means hot days, with an average high temperature of 93°F (34°C), so consider spring or fall for more pleasant weather and fewer tourist crowds. Most of the wildflowers appear in spring, after winter’s rain.

For a dose of Western Australia history, make a stop in York, the oldest inland town in the state. Settled in 1831, York is located on the Avon River in Avon Valley and draws visitors for its heritage architecture, countryside scenery, wildflowers, and adventure activities such as skydiving.
