Waterfront Promenade

1 Esplanade Drive, Singapore

Looping about 2 miles (3.5 kilometers) around Marina Bay, Singapore’s Waterfront Promenade is a cool, comfortable walking route that links some of the city-state’s star attractions. Besides the Marina Bay Sands complex and the ArtScience Museum, the promenade extends to the Merlion and, via the Helix Bridge, to Theatres on the Bay.

Most visitors to Singapore will find themselves strolling the Waterfront Promenade at one time or another, perhaps headed to the ArtScience Museum, Gardens by the Bay, or the Merlion, a Singapore icon. Shady “breeze shelters” help travelers beat the humidity using solar-powered fans, while at night the promenade hosts a spectacular light and water show, Spectra. Particularly in the early mornings, it’s a popular choice for local and visiting runners.

  • The Waterfront Promenade is a good choice for runners, walkers, and photographers.

  • Stand well back when viewing the Spectra show if you don’t want to get wet.

  • The Waterfront Promenade is smooth, flat, and wheelchair accessible.

The Waterfront Promenade runs around Marina Bay in southern Singapore, at the heart of the city’s business district. Depending on which part of the promenade you’re looking to access, MRT stations include Raffles Place (North South and East West lines), Bayfront (Downtown and Circle lines), Marina Bay (Thomson—East Coast, North Coast, and Circle lines), and Promenade (Downtown and Circle lines): Bayfront is generally the best option.

The Waterfront Promenade never closes, but runners should plan to visit in the early morning, when temperatures are cooler and there are fewer crowds. The Spectra show runs for 15 minutes at 8pm and 9pm Sunday through Thursday, and 8pm, 9pm, and 10pm on Friday and Saturday. The bay also hosts fireworks on New Year’s Eve, with parades and military displays on Singapore National Day (August 9).

The triple towers of Marina Bay Sands dominate Marina Bay’s skyline. While you can’t access the famous infinity pool unless you’re a hotel guest, the Sands Skypark Observation Deck lets you soak up spectacular city views. Other attractions include the ArtScience Museum, which hosts a wealth of touring exhibits, and Theatres on the Bay for music, dance, and the visual arts; Gardens by the Bay pair twin botanical domes with the spectacular neon trees of Supertree Grove, while the Merlion statue is an ever-popular photo stop.
