POINT OF INTEREST

Waldemarsudde Museum

Prins Eugens Väg 6, Stockholm, SWE

An admirer of art rather than royal intrigue (and a painter himself), Sweden’s Prince Eugen collected a massive collection of paintings, sculptures, and art objects, now housed in his former palace: Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde. One of the country's most beautiful art museums, it is located on the southern tip of Djurgården island and surrounded by public gardens and Stockholm harbor.

The museum comprises two buildings—the Mansion, where Prince Eugen resided from 1905 to 1947, and a gallery that displays temporary exhibitions in addition to the prince's private art collection, one of the largest in Sweden. Featuring mostly Swedish art, sculptures, and drawings, nearly half of the approximately 6,700 works on display were created by the prince. Head for the first floor, where a banquet hall and other common areas are preserved as they were in the prince's day. After the museum, the public park and gardens are free to wander.

  • Hour-long guided tours of the museum are available for an added fee.

  • Find sculptures and more preserved buildings in the gardens, such as a boathouse, an old linseed oil mill, and a cottage.

  • Sit down for a meal at Prince's Kitchen or grab a coffee and a bite at Café Ektorpet.

  • The museum gift shop sells handicrafts made in Sweden and Europe, including a popular flower pot designed by Prince Eugen.

  • Children 19 and under, seniors, and groups of 10 or more get discounted admission.

The museum lies at the southern end of Frisens Park on the island of Djurgården in central Stockholm. The city is well-connected by public transit; from the city center, catch tram line 7 to Waldemarsudde or bus 67. You can also take a taxi or rideshare to the museum; however, Djurgården is closed to cars on select weekends, so plan alternative transit if you wish to visit then.

The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from late morning to late afternoon, and Thursdays from late morning to late evening. Guided tour fees increase on weekends and after 4pm on weekdays. Visit earlier in the day to save time for exploring the garden grounds and the rest of Djurgården. The island closes to car traffic between 12–4pm on weekends from April 30 to September 28, and from 12–3pm on first and third Advent Saturdays and Sundays.

The Waldemarsudde is just one museum in Djurgården, the park-filled island in the middle of Stockholm's Salt Bay (Saltsjön). Music fans will get a kick of the ABBA The Museum, dedicated to the Swedish pop group. However, the stars are Skansen, the world's oldest open-air museum with costumed performers and a zoo, and the Vasa Museum, home to a restored 17th-century warship dredged from Stockholm harbor.
