Waioli Mission House

While some people stop here to see the home from the outside, history buffs and those who like architecture and decor may want to stop by for a docent-led tour. Be sure to ring the school bell out front so that docents know you've arrived. Inside, you'll see old furniture, a chimney made of lava rocks, a spinning wheel, and shelves of old books.

The house is located south of the Kuhio Highway (Highway 560) in Hanalei, less than a 10-minute walk from Wai'oli Beach Park on Hanalei Bay. If you're staying in Hanalei, you can easily walk to the house. From Lihue, you can get to Hanalei by car in about 55 minutes or by taking a 90-minute ride up the coast on bus No. 500.

If you want to take a tour of the house, you'll need to visit on a Tuesday, Thursday, or Sunday. Tours are offered on a first-come, first-served basis, and while it’s not such a famous attraction that there will be lines around the block, it’s a good idea to come first thing in the morning when it opens.

The historic house is just a few blocks from Wai’oli Beach Park on Hanalei Bay, one of the more popular coastal areas for visitors to the island—a worthwhile spot to check out while you’re in the area. While many people come here just to enjoy the views and get a bit of sun, there are many opportunities for active travelers, from surfing lessons to snorkeling and kayaking tours.
