POINT OF INTEREST

Würzburg Residence

Residenzplatz 2, Wurzburg, Germany

The Würzburg Residence in Southern Germany is a masterpiece of baroque architecture that is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The most impressive features of this attraction—born from the 18th-century ambition of prince-bishops and brought to life by Europe's finest artists—include a grand staircase by Balthasar Neumann and the expansive ceiling frescoes by the Venetian maestro Giovanni Battista Tiepolo.

Most travelers experience the Würzburg Residence while on private walking tours of Würzburg, often paired with visits to nearby architectural wonders such as Würzburg Cathedral and the Market Square. Visit on your own, try a self-guided scavenger hunt game, or hop aboard a tourist train for leisurely exploration. For a broader adventure, many join Romantic Road day trips, venturing beyond Würzburg to discover charming towns such as Rothenburg ob der Tauber and scenic spots in Baden-Wurttemberg.

  • There is free Wi-Fi available throughout the Würzburg Residence.

  • Three disabled parking spaces are in front of the entrance, and a bathroom is available on the ground floor near the lockers.

  • Access to all main areas is step-free via a lift.

  • The last entry is typically 30–45 minutes before closing time.

To reach the Würzburg Residence, it’s best to take a bus to the Residenzplatz bus stop (such as Nos. 9, 480, or 560). Alternatively, you can get bus No. 11 to Mainfranken Theater, then transfer to a tram bound for the Dom stop. If driving, there are 400 car parking spaces nearby, but costs apply, so public transport may be more convenient.

The Würzburg Residence is generally open year-round, with extended summer hours until early evening. Morning visits are recommended to avoid the big afternoon crowds. Winter hours may end in the late afternoon instead of early evening, so it’s wise to plan and check the schedule before visiting.

There are more than 40 palace rooms at the Würzburg Residence—each with well-preserved 18th-century treasures to discover, such as tapestries, paintings, and furniture. Don’t miss the State Gallery, which is home to Venetian artwork. You can continue your journey into historical artwork with a visit to the Court Chapel. Another must-see is Neumann’s staircase and Tiepolo’s unsupported vault, which leads to the White Hall and Imperial Hall, with further impressive frescoes.
