Voortrekker Monument

Eeufees Road, Groenkloof 358-Jr, Pretoria, ZAF

The granite Voortrekker Monument towers 200 feet (60 meters) above Pretoria. The monument was built to honor the Great Trek—a 19th-century exodus from the then British-ruled Cape Colony to central South Africa. The monument depicts the treacherous journey in the Hall of Heroes, and an empty tomb represents the lives lost on the trek.

Set within the 593-acre (240-hectare) Voortrekker Monument Nature Reserve, the Voortrekker Monument is surrounded by an indigenous garden, open-air amphitheater, and a remembrance wall. In addition to honoring the pioneers at the monument, you can learn more about the Great Trek and the history of the monument in the Hall of Heros and the basement museum. Both the hall’s depictions and the memorabilia in the museum tell the story of the pioneers’ journey.

Visit the site on a guided Pretoria city tour, which includes admission to the monument along with other nearby attractions. You can also explore the reserve on a horseback ride or an educational tour.

  • The monument is a must-visit for history buffs and those who want to learn more about South Africa's complicated history.

  • Enjoy a sit-down meal or light fare at the monument's restaurants and snack kiosks.

  • The main parts of the monument and gardens are wheelchair accessible.

  • Bring a camera to capture the vistas from the monument’s tower viewpoints.

The Voortrekker Monument is located about 4 miles (6 kilometers) from the city center and can be reached by bus or car—take Pretoria Main Road to the entrance gate. You can avoid the hassle of driving or public transportation by booking a guided tour to the site.

Open year-round, the monument and reserve frequently host concerts, markets, festivals, and other events. So, check the monument’s online event schedule before planning your trip.

In addition to its wealth of history and culture, Voortrekker Monument Nature Reserve is a convenient place to escape the bustle of the city and enjoy outdoor recreation. Popular activities include birdwatching, biking, hiking, and horseback riding. You can also relax in the reserve’s gardens and enjoy lunch at the picnic areas.
