Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild

1 Ave. Ephrussi de Rothschild, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

An Italian-style mansion on Cap Ferrat in the French Riviera, Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild is the former home of socialite and banking heiress Baroness Béatrice de Rothschild. The villa and its extensive gardens are now open to the public.

Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild was designed and built by Belgian architect Aaron Messiah. Completed in 1912, it was styled to resemble an Italian palazzo, with pink-painted walls, a gothic-style front entrance, and elaborate grounds with water features and lush planting. Inside, Verona marble and lashings of gold leaf signify Béatrice’s immense wealth.

Visitors can tour the state apartments and Béatrice’s own rooms, marvel at her collection of Old Masters paintings and priceless porcelain and explore the grounds at leisure enjoying sweeping views of the Mediterranean. For a greater insight into the villa’s collection as well as the Rothschild family, some visitors opt to take part in a tour of the grounds and the surrounding area.

  • Entry to the villa is via paid ticket.
  • Reduced-price tickets are available for children under 17.
  • Some parts of the villa are wheelchair accessible, but there are some sections of the garden with uneven paths and stairs.
  • Dogs are not allowed into the villa or its grounds.

The villa is located on Cap Ferrat, 6 miles (10 kilometers) from Nice or Monaco. There is free car parking on site. Guided tours with transport included also visit the villa regularly. The nearest train station is Beaulieu-sur-Mer and the nearest airport is in Nice.

The villa is open every day of the year. It is busiest on weekends, especially during the summer months, so consider planning to visit on a weekday for a quieter experience. People usually spend around two hours exploring the villa.

A short drive away from Cap Ferrat is the city of Nice, a thriving city built alongside the Mediterranean Sea. The Old Town is particularly charming, with pastel-colored buildings and wide squares that invite you to sit with a coffee and watch the world go by. Climb to the top of Colline de Ch?teau park to see the huge waterfall and enjoy great views over the city.
