Victoria Falls Bridge
Livingstone Way, Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe
Experience the spray of the largest sheet of falling water in the world as you stand on Victoria Falls Bridge. Spanning the Zambezi River, the former railroad bridge is now a tourist attraction where visitors can marvel at the Zambezi gorge. A unique platform for viewing the falls, the bridge is also the jumping-off point for numerous high-adrenaline sports.
The Basics
The arched, 650-foot-long (198-meter) bridge sits 420 feet (128 meters) above the Zambezi River and connects Zimbabwe and Zambia. One of the best ways to experience the Victoria Falls Bridge is on a tram or steam train ride across the bridge. Many tours include dinner, wine tastings, and historical details about the bridge. Thrill-seekers can also get their fix by taking on the Gorge Swing, bungee jumping, or ziplining from the bridge. You can also view the bridge from above on a helicopter tour of the falls.
Things to Know Before You Go
- Adrenaline junkies and history buffs should not miss a trip to the bridge.
- The historic bridge is now open to trains, cars, and foot traffic.
- You can purchase photos of your bungee jump, Gorge Swing, or zipline adventure.
- Grab a meal with bridge views at the Shearwater Bungee Cafe.
How to Get There
There is one highway (A8/Livingstone Way/Mosi-Oa-Tunya) connecting Livingstone, Zambia and Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe so the bridge is impossible to miss when traveling between the two countries. You can book a tour that visits the bridge, see it from a train, or walk the length of it.
When to Get There
When to Get ThereIf you want to feel the spray of Victoria Falls from the bridge, visit in the wet season from December through early May. The river is much lower in the dry season (October and November), making the views of the falls and Zambezi River much less impressive.
Extreme Sports from the Victoria Falls Bridge
While surrounded by natural wonders, Victoria Falls Bridge also has its fair share of man-made thrills. You can soar above the gorge on a zipline or take things to the next level by hopping on the Gorge Swing—an extreme version of a rope swing that includes a free fall. Next up, try the ultimate thrill of bungee jumping from the bridge. Or, take on the wild rapids below the bridge on a Zambezi rafting trip.
