POINT OF INTEREST

Veracruz Aquarium (Acuario de Veracruz)

Blvd. Manuel Ávila Camacho S/n, Ricardo Flores Magón, Veracruz, Veracruz

Wonder at the more than 250 native and international species, spread across 10 exhibitions and ranging from ethereal jellyfish to salt-water sharks and even penguins, at the Veracruz Aquarium (Acuario de Veracruz). Considered one of the largest aquariums in Latin America, it's focused on marine conservation and education.

Veracruz Aquarium—inaugurated in 1992 and expanded in 2009—has interactive elements to keep young children occupied, alongside tanks that focus on coral reef species, sharks, manatees, and more. Explore before or after taking a city sightseeing tour of Veracruz. Many combine an aquarium visit with a stop at neighboring Ripley’s Museum.

  • Animal lovers and families with small children appreciate the aquatic life at Veracruz Aquarium.

  • Save time by booking tickets online.

  • Swim with dolphins, feed the sharks, or meet the penguins, for an additional cost.

  • Veracruz Aquarium is wheelchair accessible.

Veracruz Aquarium sits on the water, about 1.2 miles (2 kilometers) from the city center, for about a 25-minute walk. Alternatively, take a taxi or drive; there is a small parking lot and limited street parking.

Veracruz Aquarium is open daily, with extended hours on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. If you visit Veracruz in the rainy season, between June and September, a stop at Veracruz Aquarium is a great way to hide from inclement weather. Otherwise, avoid school vacation periods, when queues can be long.

Veracruz has plenty to offer beyond the Veracruz Aquarium, including several important archaeological sites across the state, such as El Tajín and Tres Zapotes. Choose a comprehensive tour and you can visit both in a day. Alternatively, stick to the city and explore Veracruz’s colonial port past at San Juan de Ulúa, a fortress, castle, and former palace complex that's now a popular museum.
