The Valley of a Thousand Hills is located 31 miles (50 kilometers) outside of Durban. You can visit the area by car—take the N3 to Mr385 Road and Inchanga Drive to D1004 Road. Or, simplify the trip by booking a guided tour that includes round-trip transportation from your hotel. For a scenic journey, you can take the Umgeni Steam Train through the valley from Kloof.

The valley welcomes visitors year-round, but the fresh mountain air is especially appealing during Durban’s hot, humid summers (December through February).

One of the most popular ways to see the Valley of a Thousand Hills is on the historic Umgeni Steam Train from Kloof to Inchanga and back again. Traveling through the valley on a train grants you unmatched views of the stunning scenery as you overlook the valley and pass through villages. The train’s stop in Inchanga allows time to explore the local craft market before making the return trip to Kloof.
